Why do I need a domain ?

Hosting
If you are thinking of starting a web site, and don't want to host it on your Internet Provider's (ISP's) servers, then you need a domain name. It is the address that you tell everyone so they can visit your web site and view all your hard work (or buy something you're selling!). Without it, they can do neither. To have a web site you need two things: a registrar for your domain and a host for your web site. A domain registrar is like the authority that keeps on record that you're a valid driver or tax payer - it provides details that you are the owner of your domain name (and prevents anyone else owning it), and allows easy access and transfer of details when you add more domains or sell your current one. The host is the company that owns the memory capacity boxes (called servers) on which your web site resides. There are many registrars and hosting companies - see below for the ones we recommend.

Redirection
It is of course possible that you want to buy an additional domain name for marketing purposes but do not want to change the current address of your web site (eg., you may own SmithsCarRental.co.uk and have managed to buy CarHire.com which is much more memorable and brandable). This is simply a matter of redirecting the new domain to your current one. Simply go to the domain management area of your registrar where you have bought your new doman, enter the nameserver addresses for your current web site hosts, then go to your server hosts' management system and add a redirection - your hosts should provide a guide to help you with this.

Domaining
There is a lucrative - and growing - industry known as 'Domaining', in which people buy and sell domains. You can register brand new domains at your register or 'catch' previously-registered domains when they 'drop' or become available because their owners have not renewed the registration fee on them. More than 60,000 domain names 'drop' every day. Money is made from these domains in one of two ways: Parking, ie. pointing the domain at a company which displays adverts on your domain page and you earn money each time an ad is clicked on; or Developing, ie. you write a web site for the domain and host it yourself. For either of these options you need to know about nameservers. These are simple addresses which 'point' your domain to a particular location, be it a parking company or your server host. When you sign up with a server host you will be told, usually in the Welcome email, what your nameservers are. Make a note of them. If you sign up with a parking company, they will tell you their nameservers in their step-by-step process for parking your domain with them. Note: Domaining is not 'cybersquatting' - this term from the dotcom boom of the early 2000s refers to people buying trademarked terms and waiting for the megabucks companies to give them huge amounts of money to buy the names from them. This no longer happens - expensive court cases are the much-preferred option instead! Consequently, Rule 1 of Domaining is: Forget about domain names containing trademarks.

Buying A Domain from pfDomains.com
If you are the successful winner of an auction of one of our domains, or if we have agreed a Buy Now price, then Sedo will contact you for your payment in the first instance. This will be held in escrow until it clears. When it has, Sedo will request that pfDomains start the process which will see the transfer of ownership from our registrar to yours. We will have been notified of your registrar details and once the process of transfer has begun, your registrar will email you with the instruction to accept the domain into your account. And that's it! You change the nameservers so that it points to wherever you want (as described above) and the domain is yours for the use of. Read more on this process at Sedo. We will be happy to answer any enquiries you may have on this subject.
